Class A amplifiers

Hit Counter

Class "A"
Class A is the simplest and most basic topology, the amplifier operate in the linear region for 360° of the AV input waveform (i.e.....the output device (s) are always in conduction).
Advantages
Very Low Distortion no crossover distortion exist
Disadvantages
Quiescent power dissipation is very high resulting in poor efficiency, and Maximum power is limited due to the constant current stage, reducing dynamic range
Conclusions and comments
Class A is often used as a bench mark to whish amplifiers are referenced for sonic quality, and only applies to esoteric, hi-end designs where poor efficiency and cost are not a factors.
