MOSFETs
have been used lately by power
conversion designers due to:
Fast
switching
Simple
drive
Low
conduction losses
Very
low RDS(on) in low voltage MOSFETs
IGBTs
have held the promise of be a more cost effective
replacement for Power MOSFETs, unfortunately they have not
been able to deliver due to the following reasons:
IGBT’s
are not quite fast enough to cover many of the applications
Despite
the indications that IGBTs cost less they were not cost
effective compared to the rapidly falling prices of MOSFETs
in the last couple of years. (IR Notes)
